Composition

Welcome back! Today’s topic is all about how different types of focus can shape the composition of a shot and enhance the mood of a scene. Below, you’ll find a collection of images we captured during practice, along with insights into how each type of focus impacts the viewer’s emotions and the overall storytelling.

Rule of Thirds:

A Rule of Thirds shot positions the subject along gridlines or intersections. This technique draws the viewer’s eye naturally to the subject while also allowing the background to play a significant role, adding depth and context to the scene.

Shallow Focus:

A shallow focus shot keeps the subject sharp while blurring the background, directing attention to the subject and creating a sense of intimacy or isolation.

Standard Focus:

A standard focus shot sharpens the subject and background, immersing viewers in the full scene. It balances focus, drawing attention to both the subject and important contextual details.

Deep Focus:

A deep focus shot keeps everything in the frame, from foreground to background, in sharp detail. This technique allows for complex compositions where multiple elements are equally important, giving the viewer freedom to explore the entire scene and deepening the storytelling.

Focus Pull:

A focus pull shot shifts the focus from one subject to another within the same frame, guiding the viewer’s attention and creating a dynamic sense of movement. This technique enhances storytelling by emphasizing relationships between elements and adding depth to the scene.
